7 Fall/Winter 2011-2012 Style Trends Make a Comeback: Are They ‘Fabu’ or Taboo for You?
Is summer really over? Seems most east coast dwellers and visitors were robbed of the last ten days or so of beachwear starting with hurricane Irene. Then BOOM! Labor Day came and went leaving us in oblivion as far as what to wear for the upcoming months before we gear up for sandals and sundresses all over again. Well, I for one have started my seasonal closet clearing with vigor and excitement for two reasons: my natural coloring favors the rich hues of autumn and I’ve dropped two dress sizes since the last time I’ve sported many of these garments. So as I carefully select the classic pieces worth altering I realize that many of them are consistent with what has re-emerged as ‘hot’ for fall/winter 2011-2012. Regardless of the trends, any article of clothing that doesn’t absolutely flatter my now trim yet curvy silhouette becomes a donated item. One thing I remind myself and others about style trends is that however fabulous they look on a runway, unflattering, impractical, or just plain ugly apparel is not worth occupying one cubic inch of precious closet space.
As I cleared my closet, I discovered 7 existing pieces which happen to be on trend with this season’s fall-winter ‘must haves.’ That means I’ve either acquired far too many consumables throughout the years or designers were not terribly imaginative in their product development. In any case, here are my thoughts on what makes them ‘fabu’ or taboo for you or me.
1. Tie Blouses
‘Fabu:’ Tie blouses look hip when worn with skinny jeans, cigarette pants or fitted corduroys, especially when they are willowy and blousy. Paired with a fitted pencil skirt, the tie blouse will also have that updated look we all look to achieve.
Taboo: Coordinate a tie blouse with a long A-line skirt or double-pleated pants and your look will go from chic to dowdy.
2. Polka Dots
'Fabu:’ The polka dot patterns I found in my closet are mostly on scarves (small kerchiefs) and the sizes of the dots are small to medium. Larger print polka dots would balance a more robust person. Fun and whimsical when used correctly, polka dots can break up the monotony of pin stripes or solids.
Taboo: Unlike other patterns which can be repeated throughout an outfit, polka dots tend to look clown-like even if you vary the dot sizes throughout. While it can be a fun print to wear (not for me), keep in mind that it does not project assertiveness or poise. The only person I’ve seen pull off polka dots with flair has been Heidi Klum when she wore “Project Runway” contestant, Mondo Guerra’s creation to the Black Swan premiere in L.A.
3.‘70s Inspired Day Dresses
‘Fabu:’ There is no garment that makes me feel more feminine than a dress and a day dress (either ¾ sleeved or long sleeved) allows flexibility for day wear into
after work wear with just a quick change of earrings (maybe shoes). The retro prints and comfortable silhouettes make them eternal wardrobe staples, even when they’re not featured on the runway.
Taboo:Depending on your lifestyle or your work environment, some of the fabric prints of ‘70s inspired day dresses can be too bohemian. Also, choose natural fabrics instead of synthetics if you intend on expanding the duration of the wear from day into evening for absorbency and comfort.
4. Tuxedo Wear (Menswear-inspired Black Tie)
‘Fabu:’ Mine is Valentino. I absolutely love how tall and lean I look and feel in all black and in the well constructed vertical lines of tuxedo wear. Sharp and sleek, tuxedo wear is a modern alternative to wearing a cocktail dress.
‘Taboo: Some of the tuxedo wear I’ve seen on the runway this season in velvet fabric is neither flattering (looks bulky other than on a super slender model silhouette) nor comfortable (too hot) to wear from head-to-toe for an extended period of time.
5. Color-blocked Brights
'Fabu:’ A fabulous way to get out of wardrobe rut is to invest in color-blocked garments or to create them yourself by coordinating bright color pieces together. My advice is to not go with more than three colors if you don’t want to look like a jester. Use analogous colors (colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel) such as blue green and yellow, or red, violet and blue or yellow, orange and red.
Taboo: Poorly chosen color-blocked brights will make you look shorter and heavier than you really are since fluid lines are interrupted through bright colors. Also, if your natural coloring is overpowered by brights then wearing an entire color-blocked outfit would be a poor style choice.
6. Wide Leg Pants
'Fabu:’ This is a style that reappears every other year and one that seems to be sported even when it’s not at the forefront of fashion. Wide leg pants are great for camouflaging legs that are either too thick or too thin. Worn with a platform or stacked heel, wide leg pants will balance a long torso.
Taboo: While petite women (5’4” and under) can certainly wear wide leg pants, ones that are too wide will contribute to a stout appearance. From a practical standpoint, wide leg pants can be challenging in an active work environment or during a rigorous commute. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tripped going down the stairs on Metro North rushing to catch a train while wearing wide leg pants.
7. Mixed Plaids (Plaids, Check & Tartans)
'Fabu:’ This is another one of those DIY looks which if done correctly can be fun, smart, and even sexy all in one. The trick is to work with a similar color palette and to play around with the scale of the patterns. For example, a large window pane suit, over a small check print shirt and medium plaid-print scarf will look ultra polished and fashionable.
Taboo: Similar to the all-around polka dot print, mixed plaids can be dangerously limiting on smaller frames and costume-like on all frames if overused.
